William Saunders
Born in England, William Saunders came to Canada in 1848 and became a pharmacist. A recognized expert in scientific agriculture, he was appointed director of the new Experimental Farms Branch of the federal Department of Agriculture in 1886. There, he created many promising varieties of fruit and grain, and began the research which led to the development of Marquis wheat by his son, Charles. Co-founder of the Royal Society of Canada and president in 1906–1907, Saunders was a distinguished member of numerous learned societies and author of many ground-breaking articles, papers, and reports. Né en Angleterre, William Saunders arrive au Canada en 1848 et devient pharmacien. Ses compétences en agriculture scientifique lui valent, en 1886, d’être nommé directeur de la nouvelle Direction des fermes expérimentales du ministère fédéral de l’Agriculture. Il met au point plusieurs variétés de fruits et légumes et commence les recherches qui permettent à son fils Charles de créer le blé Marquis. Co-fondateur de la Société royale du Canada, puis son président de 1906 à 1907, il est un membre distingué de nombreuses sociétés savantes et l’auteur d’importantes communications scientifiques. Il a vécu ici.
