William Johnstone Milne Memorial Plaque
This plaque was erected by the Saskatchewan Heritage Society. On April 9, 1917, Private William Johnstone Milne, a member of the a formation from the 16th Battalion of the Canadian Scottish Regiment, was advancing on opposing forces on Vimy Ridge, France. Seeing an enemy machine gun firing on the Canadian forces, Milne dropped to the ground and crawled on his hands and knees to the gun’s location and secured the position. As the battle progressed he again saw a machine gun threatening the Canadian advance. He repeated his previous deed, saving the lives of scores of his comrades, who continued their advance up the Ridge. Private Milne was one of the many who lost their lives that day at Vimy. The site of his grave is unknown. His Victoria Cross was awarded posthumously.
