Wharf Street

From a muddy trail fronting Fort Victoria’s palisades, this street changed with the maturing city. In the 1850’s, Hudson’s Bay Co. ships loaded firs while moored to the shore. In the 1860’s, gold seekers, lured by “Cariboo”, landed here. In the 1890’s, the street pulsated with crews of sealing fleet schooners and miners bound for the Klondike. Now only quiet buildings recall the hectic days.

Rue Wharf

De sentier boueux longeant la palissade du fort Victoria, cette rue s’est transformée au rythme de la ville. Dans les années 1850, les navires de la Compagnie de la Baie d’Hudson y chargeaient des fourrures, amarrés au rivage. Dans les années 1860, des chercheurs d’or attirés par le Cariboo y débarquaient. Dans les années 1890, la rue vibrait au rythme des équipages des goélettes de chasse au phoque et des mineurs en route vers le Klondike. Aujourd’hui, seuls des bâtiments tranquilles rappellent ces jours trépidants.
