Wayside Cross – 1892, chemin Saint-Antoine

The wayside cross at 1892, chemin Saint-Antoine, a cited historic monument, is a popular place of worship of the Catholic tradition. Erected in 1919, this chamfered wooden cross consists of an upright and a crossbar ending in polygonal decorations. The wayside cross stands in a rural setting, set back from the public road, on landscaped grounds. It is located in the La Baie borough of the city of Saguenay.

The heritage value of the wayside cross at 1892, chemin Saint-Antoine lies in its ethnological interest. The first wayside crosses appeared in Québec with the construction of the chemin du Roy between Québec and Montréal. They continued to spread as roads were opened into the hinterland. Wayside crosses recall old practices that reflect popular religion. The wayside cross sometimes served as a substitute for the church, particularly in the rangs, when the place of worship was too far away to reach. It was at its foot that French-speaking Catholics performed their devotions. They came there, among other occasions, during the month of Mary and the novena to Saint Anne in July, to recite evening prayers, ask for a special favour or pray for the protection of the crops. A cross could also commemorate an event or a death. The wayside cross at 1892, chemin Saint-Antoine still evokes these old practices today. It is thus a significant element of Québec’s religious heritage.

The heritage value of the wayside cross at 1892, chemin Saint-Antoine also lies in its representativeness of simple crosses. Wayside crosses mark the land with signs of the sacred. They fall into three main types: simple crosses, crosses bearing the instruments of the Passion, and calvaries displaying the body of Christ. The simple cross sometimes has no ornament at all, or else features geometric or floral decorative elements at its ends or at the intersection. This type of cross is found throughout Québec. The wayside cross at 1892, chemin Saint-Antoine is a representative example of this type, with its simple decoration consisting notably of polygonal elements at the ends and a gilded motif at the intersection.
