Walkerton Soldiers' Memorial

The Soldiers’ Memorial is dedicated to the men of Walkerton who gave their lives in the First and Second World Wars. The Horticultural Society plants flowers at the site each year. Mrs. Oswald Lumley, the wife of First World War veteran, Oswald Lumley, wrote the inscription, while the McIntosh Monument Company of Toronto, Ontario designed the memorial.

Article from local newspaper: Soldiers’ Memorial Purchased. The Special Committee appointed to purchase a Soldiers’ Memorial for Walkerton, closed a deal on Thursday night with the McIntosh Granite Co. Ltd. of Toronto for a handsome monument to cost $4000. The memorial is to be composed of gray granite and is to have a three step granite base, with die and cap, and on which is mounted a huge statue of a Canadian soldier standing at ease with rifle in hand. The monument will be 17 feet high and will contain the names of the 35 Walkerton heroes who fell in the war, together with the name of the battle in which each was slain.

The memorial will be erected on the northwest corner of the Armoury grounds on a raised mound thirty feet square, and which will be bordered with poppies and other flowers. It is to be completed by July 20th, and the unveiling will take place on the big military day at the Old Boys’ and Girls’ Reunion here in July.

Excerpt from The Bruce Herald and Times, Walkerton, November 10th, 1921. Walkerton Honours Heroic Dead The Armistice Day services which took place in front of the Soldiers’ Monument here at 11 o’clock on Friday morning last, were amongst the most impressive ceremonies ever witnessed here. A procession composed of the returned soldiers, the Town Council, the I.O.D.E. and the pupils of the High and Public Schools, headed by the Band, and along with many hundreds of people paid tribute to the memory of Walkerton’s heroic dead.

Excerpt from local newspaper article: The Town Is Yours Unveiling of Memorial No incident of the week so stirred the hearts of returning old boys as the unveiling of the beautiful memorial that has been raised to commemorate the sacrifice made by forty-nine of Walkerton’s best young manhood who laid down their lives on the altar of their country. This solemn and impressive ceremony was performed on Tuesday afternoon in the presence of a great throng of citizens, old boys and visitors. Mayor McNab occupied the chair.

The order of service included a chorus, “O Canada” by the pupils of the Public, Separate and High Schools; Funeral march, 48th Highlanders’ Band; Prayer, Rev. Capt. Perdue; Hymns, “O God, Our Help in Ages Past,” and “Abide With Me”; Scripture reading out of Revelations, by Rev. Will Todd of Algona, Iowa; a short address by His Worship Mayor McNab; the unveiling of the monument by the honoured guest of the occasion, General Shannon of London, the head officer of this Military District, who in so doing paid an eloquent tribute to “my boys”.

“The Last Post”, which is always so affecting to old service men was given by a member of the 48th Highlanders, followed by the benediction by Rev. W.H. Burgess and the Dead March in Saul by the 48th Highlanders’ Band. After the unveiling a bouquet for each soldier was placed on the monument by the I.O.D.E., a number of relatives brought flowers, a beautiful wreath was presented by the Old Boys’ Executive, and the Union Jack, beautifully done in flowers, by the Walkerton Horticultural Society.
