W.W. 1 German Trench Mortar
The mortar was awarded to the Township of Pelham in 1921 by the Government of Canada and placed next to the Pelhman Cenotaph. It, was one of 101 trench mortars brought to Canada and is one of few that was not melted for Second World War efforts.
After 95 years, the mortar deteriorated and there was talk of removing it and replacing it with an artifact from the Second World War or the Korean War. A group of dedicated citizens and representatives came together to work with the Town and Council to help restore the historic monument. A plaque was added explaining the significance of the mortar and the newly restored mortar was dedicated on Saturday, September 10, 2016.

W.W. 1 German Trench Mortar
Located on this site is a German trench mortar (minewerfer).
This mortar, consider a “War Trophy,” was awarded to the Township of Pelhman in 1921 by the Government of Canada.
It is considered a memorial to those from this community who made the supreme sacrifice during the Great War 1914-18.
The mortar was captured by the 31st Batallion, Canadian Expeditionary Force in a raid on enemy trenches at Neuville-Vitasse, France on 23-24 June 1918.
