Vieux Collège

The Vieux Collège, a cited historic monument, is an educational building constructed in 1912. The stone building has a rectangular plan and a three-storey elevation. It is topped by a flat roof. A two-level bell turret surmounts the central avant-corps. Located at an intersection, it is set back from the street on landscaped grounds. The Vieux Collège is near the Saint-Jacques church, the presbytery and the former convent of the Sisters of Saint Anne, in the institutional core of the municipality of Saint-Jacques.

The heritage value of the Vieux Collège lies in its architectural interest. The building is representative of classically inspired conventual buildings with an educational vocation. The use of classical forms continued until the middle of the 20th century for these structures. They generally have a rectangular plan, a symmetrical façade with a central bell turret, two or three storeys and stone cladding. These colleges or convents have a sober appearance, and their ornamental elements, such as quoins, are frequently inspired by classical architecture. The features of the Vieux Collège in Saint-Jacques, built in 1912, link it to this architectural model. Its monumental façade, marked by the central avant-corps adorned with a statue and surmounted by a bell turret, is also typical of conventual buildings constructed since the middle of the 19th century. It stands out, however, for its flat roof, which recalls its later period of construction. The two lanterns surmounting the corners of the façade are another distinctive feature of the building. The Vieux Collège is therefore a significant example of the architecture of educational institutions in a rural setting.

The heritage value of the Vieux Collège also lies in its setting. Located a few metres from the Saint-Jacques church, the presbytery and the former convent of the Sisters of Saint Anne, three cited historic monuments, the Vieux Collège is part of the institutional core of Saint-Jacques. The parish cemetery, its enclosure and its calvary, as well as the sexton’s house, are added to this ensemble, which dominates the heart of the municipality. Like several other components of the site, it is set back from the main street, on landscaped grounds that enhance it. In addition, an elementary school was built behind the Vieux Collège, accentuating the presence of institutional establishments in the area.

The heritage value of the Vieux Collège also lies in its historical interest. The building recalls the presence of the Brothers of Saint-Gabriel in the community, as well as their role and influence. The Sisters of Saint Anne had been teaching the girls of the region for more than half a century when the Brothers of Saint-Gabriel settled in Saint-Jacques. Established in the heart of the old village core of Saint-Jacques from 1901 to 1961, they took charge of educating the boys of the surrounding area. The building, then called Académie Saint-Louis-de-France, was constructed in 1912 to meet the growing needs of their institution. The Vieux Collège bears witness to the contribution of the Brothers of Saint-Gabriel in the area around the municipality of Saint-Jacques.
