Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Ascension
The Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Ascension is a Municipal Heritage Property comprising a four thousand square-meter parcel located approximately 9.5 kilometres southeast of the Village of Arran within the Rural Municipality of St. Philips No. 301. The property features an Orthodox Church, a cemetery, hall and cairn.
The heritage value of The Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Ascension lies in its association with the congregants who built this church. Wishing to practise their faith in their adopted homeland, the fourteen Ukrainian families who homestead this area founded a Orthodox congregation. Built between 1934 and 1937, this representative example of Byzantine architecture was built from donated materials and volunteer labour. Many of the founding congregants are buried in the cemetery located a few dozen metres from the church. A hall was later added and the church became both a place of worship and an important cultural centre.
The heritage value of The Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Ascension also resides in the artwork and iconography. Elaborate frescos adorn the walls and ceiling of the nave. The icons which adorn the iconostasis are excellent examples of the Orthodox artistic tradition.

La Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Ascension est un bien patrimonial municipal comprenant une parcelle de quatre mille mètres carrés située à environ 9,5 kilomètres au sud-est du village d’Arran, dans la municipalité rurale (MR) de St. Philips no 301. La propriété comprend une église orthodoxe, un cimetière, une salle et un cairn.
La valeur patrimoniale de la Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Ascension réside dans son association avec les fidèles qui ont construit cette église. Désireuses de pratiquer leur foi dans leur patrie d’adoption, les quatorze familles ukrainiennes qui s’établirent dans cette région fondèrent une congrégation orthodoxe. Construit entre 1934 et 1937, cet exemple représentatif d’architecture byzantine fut réalisé avec des matériaux donnés et du travail bénévole. Bon nombre des fidèles fondateurs sont inhumés dans le cimetière situé à quelques dizaines de mètres de l’église. Une salle fut ajoutée plus tard, et l’église devint à la fois un lieu de culte et un centre culturel important.
La valeur patrimoniale de la Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Ascension réside aussi dans ses œuvres d’art et son iconographie. Des fresques élaborées ornent les murs et le plafond de la nef. Les icônes qui ornent l’iconostase sont d’excellents exemples de la tradition artistique orthodoxe.
