Trois-Rivières Windmill
The Trois-Rivières Windmill, classified in 1961, is a four-storey cylindrical stone tower topped by a low-pitched conical roof. Built in 1781 near the St. Lawrence River, this mill was moved in 1975 to the campus of the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières.
The heritage value of the Trois-Rivières Windmill lies in its historical importance. Unlike the majority of mills built in Québec, it is not a banal (seigneurial) mill. It is therefore linked not to the socio-economic life of a seigneury, but rather to that of the town of Trois-Rivières. It was owned by a private individual, who leased it to a miller. The people of Trois-Rivières had their grain ground there between 1781 and 1854, the year it ceased operations owing to stiff competition from other mills.
The heritage value of the Trois-Rivières mill lies in its representativeness. Like the other mills of the St. Lawrence Valley, it is a cylindrical stone tower topped by a conical roof. With its four storeys, the Trois-Rivières mill is the tallest of the 19 windmills preserved in Québec.
The heritage value of the Trois-Rivières Windmill also lies in its technological and ethnological interest. Although it has lost its original mechanisms, it bears witness to a milling technique used during the French Regime and the early British Regime. Like several other mills erected between the 17th and 19th centuries in the St. Lawrence Valley, it stood on the banks of the St. Lawrence River, in a flat area, in order to take advantage of the prevailing winds. It also bears witness to the skill of the millers who worked there.
The heritage value of the Trois-Rivières Windmill lies finally in its symbolic function, since it was acquired by the Ville de Trois-Rivières in 1906 and was repaired and given new sails and a new roof on the occasion of the city’s tercentenary celebrations. The City thus expressed its desire to preserve this structure, drawing attention to its history and its interest as a witness to an aspect of life in former times and to a skill that has fallen into disuse.
