Tom Longboat

This Onondaga athlete, born on the Six Nations reserve of the Grand River Iroquois, became the foremost long distance runner of his time. He followed the ancient Iroquois tradition of running, winning many races in Canada and abroad, including the Boston Marathon of 1907. He also participated in the Olympics of 1908. Competing when professional foot races were a popular attraction, he was one of the first Canadian athletes to make a living solely from sports. Retiring from competitive racing before the First World War, he later served as a despatch carrier in that conflict. He died on this reserve.

Cet athlète onontagué est né dans la réserve des Iroquois de la Grande Rivière. Il y apprit la course, selon la vieille tradition iroquoise, et devint le plus grand coureur de fond de son temps. Il gagna de nombreuses compétitions au Canada et à l’étranger, dont le Marathon de Boston en 1907. Il participa aussi aux Jeux Olympiques de 1908. À une époque où la course professionnelle était une attraction populaire, il fut l’un des premiers athlètes canadiens à vivre uniquement du sport. S’étant retiré de la course de compétition avant la première guerre mondiale, il servit comme messager pendant le conflit. Il mourut dans cette réserve.
