The Ranching Industry

The first ranching operation in Saskatchewan was based on the bison that roamed the prairies feeding on sparse but nutritious prairie grass. In the seventies and eighties the coming of police, railway workers and settlers provided a need for surer food supply. This combined with the new railroad, and the depletion of American ranges and the destruction of the buffalo herds led to a ranching boom. Despite many hazards, natural and unnatural, the ranching industry dominated this area for thirty years. The disastrous winter of 1906 heralded the end of an era. Shortly the ranges were broken up and much of it put under the plough. In recent years most of this land has returned to grass and ranching has been revived as one of the premier industries of Saskatchewan.
