The Last Best West

At the turn of the Twentieth Century, efforts were made to assure the development of agriculture as a major industry in the Canadian West. Between 1896 and 1914 the Canadian government and private land companies encouraged experienced farmers to migrate from the American Midwest. In the belief that the American Frontier of cheap land had ended, Canada referred to the Canadian West as “The Last Best West” where the American farmer could still find good land and continue the ideal life of farming. Thousands of farmers responded to the appeal and settled in the West, with many travelling the Soo Line through North Portal to reach their farms. This arrival of American farmers aided significantly in the establishment of the farming industry in Saskatchewan.
