The First Premier

Irish-born Victoria lawyer John Foster McCreight was selected by Lieutenant-Governor Trutch to be British Columbia’s first premier. Entering the Executive Council in July 1871, he laid the legislative base for the new province from November 1871 until defeated on a confidence vote in December 1872. Leaving politics in 1875, he was appointed to the Provincial Supreme Court in 1880 and retired in 1897.

John Foster McCreight, avocat de Victoria né en Irlande, a été choisi par le lieutenant-gouverneur Trutch pour être le premier premier ministre de la Colombie-Britannique. Entré au Conseil exécutif en juillet 1871, il a posé les assises législatives de la nouvelle province de novembre 1871 jusqu’à sa défaite lors d’un vote de confiance en décembre 1872. Ayant quitté la politique en 1875, il a été nommé à la Cour suprême provinciale en 1880 et a pris sa retraite en 1897.
