The Crystal Cottage
The Crystal Cottage is located at 35 Chatham Street, on the south side, west of Market Street, in the City of Brantford. The one storey, buff brick cottage was constructed in circa 1876.
The property was designated, by the City of Brantford in 1985, for its cultural heritage value, under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act, By-law 6-85.
The Crystal Cottage at 35 Chatham Street is an exceptional example of a late 19th century Brantford vernacular cottage. Typical of this style is the one storey, rectangular house plan and medium gable roof. The Crystal Cottage has its name inscribed on the front facade and is descriptive of its unique glass bottle architectural detail. The Crystal Cottage incorporates intricate bargeboard beneath the gable and eaves. The cottage features original wood window frames and shutters. Red brick accents the windows and doors. The radiating voussoirs, above the windows and doors, enhances the brick and bottle detail.

Le Cottage de cristal (The Crystal Cottage) est situé au 35, Chatham Street, du côté sud, à l’ouest de Market Street, dans la ville de Brantford. Ce cottage d’un étage en brique chamois a été construit vers 1876.
La propriété a été désignée en 1985 par la Ville de Brantford pour sa valeur sur le plan du patrimoine culturel, en vertu de la partie IV de la Loi sur le patrimoine de l’Ontario (règlement municipal 6-85).
Le Cottage de cristal, au 35, Chatham Street, est un exemple exceptionnel du cottage vernaculaire de Brantford de la fin du XIXe siècle. Le plan rectangulaire d’un étage et le toit à pignon de pente moyenne sont typiques de ce style. Le nom du Cottage de cristal est inscrit sur la façade avant et évoque son détail architectural unique fait de bouteilles de verre. Le Cottage de cristal comporte une bordure de pignon ouvragée sous le pignon et les avant-toits. Le cottage présente ses cadres de fenêtres et ses volets d’origine en bois. De la brique rouge souligne les fenêtres et les portes. Les claveaux rayonnants au-dessus des fenêtres et des portes mettent en valeur le décor de brique et de bouteilles.
