The 49th Parallel
The Oregon Treaty of 1846 set the United States and British North American border at the 49th parallel from Lake of the Woods, Ontario westward to Vancouver, British Columbia. Vancouver Island, which is intersected by the 49th parallel at Ladysmith was retained by Great Britain until the colony of B.C. joined Canada in 1871.

Le traité de l’Oregon de 1846 a fixé la frontière entre les États-Unis et l’Amérique du Nord britannique au 49e parallèle, du lac des Bois, en Ontario, vers l’ouest jusqu’à Vancouver, en Colombie-Britannique. L’île de Vancouver, que le 49e parallèle traverse à Ladysmith, est restée à la Grande-Bretagne jusqu’à l’entrée de la colonie de la Colombie-Britannique dans le Canada en 1871.
