Têtu House

The maison Têtu, a cited historic monument, is a French-inspired rural residence built in 1739. The rectangular, one-and-a-half-storey roughcast stone dwelling is topped by a straight-pitched gable roof. The designation also includes a former agricultural outbuilding and the land. Set back from the public road, the property stands on a large, gently sloping lot planted with mature trees, in a rural setting, in the town of Montmagny.

The heritage value of the maison Têtu lies in its historical interest. Built in 1739, it is one of the oldest surviving residences in the Montmagny area. It is located in the seigneury of la Rivière-du-Sud, granted in 1646 to the Governor General of New France, Charles Huault de Montmagny (circa 1583-1653). A large proportion of the buildings of the Côte-du-Sud, a territory now extending from Beaumont to Saint-André-de-Kamouraska, were burned during the War of the Conquest. Few buildings predating 1760 therefore survive. Furthermore, the house takes its name from a family that lived in it for nearly 230 years. Félix Têtu (1735-1813) was the first of the family to settle in Canada, in 1754. Through his marriage to Marie-Madeleine Vallée, widow of Louis Bélanger (died in 1765), he acquired this stone residence. Several of Félix Têtu’s descendants left their mark on the history of the locality during the 19th century. Among those who lived in the house was, notably, Félix Têtu (1769-1853), notary, captain and then lieutenant-colonel of the Québec militia, and member for Hertford. François Têtu (died in 1857), seigneur of the rear fief of Saint-Luc between 1817 and 1854 and militia captain, used the property as a seigneurial manor. The former agricultural outbuilding recalls the presence of a farm operated for a century and a half. The maison Têtu belonged to this family until 1997. It bears witness to the importance of its members in the history of Montmagny and the region.

The heritage value of the maison Têtu also lies in its architectural interest. It is representative of the French-inspired rural dwelling. This type stems from French models and know-how adapted to particular local conditions, such as the climate and the availability of materials. The maison Têtu illustrates it through its rectangular main body of roughcast masonry, its low clearance above the ground, its one-and-a-half-storey elevation, its steep straight-pitched gable roof and its rectangular openings, some of them casement windows with small panes. The openings are arranged regularly; on the rear wall, however, they are irregular. The probable addition of the gabled dormers in the 19th century also attests to changes in the way the space was lived in. The components of the maison Têtu thus make it a representative example of 18th-century rural dwellings and of their architectural evolution. In addition, the former agricultural outbuilding built near the residence is typical of the farm outbuilding architecture of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Its simple plan, its gable roof with bellcast eaves, its large doors and the use of inexpensive materials such as wood shingles and sheet metal are representative of this.
