Tessier-Dit-Laplante House

The Tessier-Dit-Laplante House, a classified historic monument, is a neoclassical-style residence built in 1866. The rectangular, storey-and-a-half stone building rests on an exposed foundation that follows the slope of the land and forms an additional storey on the south side. The gable roof with flared eaves forms a canopy over the front and rear galleries. The Tessier-Dit-Laplante House is set back from avenue Royale, at the eastern end of the Beauport historic district, in the Beauport borough of the city of Québec. It is surrounded by a protection area.

The heritage value of the Tessier-Dit-Laplante House lies in its architectural interest. The dwelling is a representative example of the neoclassical-inspired Québec house. This type of dwelling dominated the built landscape of the countryside and villages in the 19th century. It synthesizes the French-inspired house and formal contributions of British influence, while reflecting a new way of living. The Tessier-Dit-Laplante House illustrates the French-inspired house through its stone masonry, rectangular plan, storey-and-a-half elevation and gable roof. The British contributions can be seen in the symmetry of the front façade, the regular arrangement of the openings and the flared eaves forming a canopy over the front and rear galleries. The dormers bear witness to the use of the attic as living space rather than as a loft, as was often the case previously. The slope of the land allowed the cellar to be used for purposes other than storage, notably as a kitchen.

The heritage value of the Tessier-Dit-Laplante House also lies in the interest of its siting. Located on one of the highest plateaus of the Côte-de-Beaupré, the dwelling is surrounded by a large lot and is part of a remarkable visual sequence along avenue Royale.

Maison Tessier-Dit-Laplante
