Tassie's School

The Galt Grammar School was established in 1852 in a former township hall and William Tassie (1815-1866) became headmaster the following year. Previously assistant headmaster at the Gore District Schoolboard in Hamilton, Tassie had come to Canada from Dublin in 1834. Under his direction the Galt School, familiarly known as “Tassie’s” attained widespread recognition and attracted students from all over the continent. In 1853 the school was moved to a stone building which forms part of this structure, and in 1872 was among the first in the province to attain the status of Collegiate Institute. Finding the new system incompatible with his own methods of teaching, Dr. Tassie resigned in 1881.

La Galt Grammar School fut établie en 1852 dans un ancien hôtel de ville, et William Tassie (1815-1866) devint directeur l’année suivante. Précédemment directeur adjoint à l’école de district de Gore à Hamilton, Tassie émigra au Canada de Dublin en 1834. Sous sa direction, la Galt Grammar School, familièrement connue sous le nom de « Tassie’s », se tailla rapidement une bonne et vaste réputation et attira des élèves de tout le continent. En 1853, l’école fut déplacée dans un bâtiment de pierre qui forme une partie de cette structure et, en 1872, fut parmi les premières de la province à devenir un institut collégial. Trouvant le nouveau système incompatible avec ses propres méthodes d’enseignement, Tassie donna sa démission en 1881.
