T.-E.-Draper Tugboat

The T.-E.-Draper tugboat, a recognized historic property, is a steel boat built in 1929. Its second deck is surmounted by a wheelhouse at the front and a funnel amidships. Equipped with a powerful engine, it was used to tow booms (floating structures grouping many logs to facilitate their transport) holding up to 50,000 logs on lac des Quinze and lac Simard, in Témiscamingue. Since 1978, it has been in dry dock on the shore of lac des Quinze, in the village of Angliers.

The heritage value of the T.-E.-Draper tugboat lies in the important role it played in the history of the forest industry in Témiscamingue. Put into service in 1929, it was the keystone of the log-driving system on lac des Quinze and lac Simard for nearly 50 years. This towing unit, the largest of the Canadian International Paper (CIP) company, bears witness to log-driving activities on inland waters and evokes the period during which this company was the only one exploiting the forests of northern Témiscamingue, that is, until the mid-1970s.

The heritage value of the T.-E.-Draper tugboat also lies in its ethnological interest. It recalls how timber was transported by floating on the lakes of Témiscamingue and the life of tugboat crews. In spring, the logs cut in the lumber camps during the winter were driven down the rivers to the main lakes. They were then assembled into booms at gathering points and towed by boats such as the T.-E.-Draper to the lake outlets. Towing went on day and night without interruption from ice breakup until late fall, except on the Saint-Jean-Baptiste holiday, when the crew went ashore for 24 hours. Thus, during the entire log-driving season, the men lived exclusively on the boat. The crew of the T.-E.-Draper consisted of two captains, two mechanics and two deckhands, who worked six-hour shifts, as well as a cook. The tugboat therefore evokes an activity and a way of life that have now disappeared in Québec, and it now houses an interpretation centre on log driving in Témiscamingue.

The heritage value of the T.-E.-Draper tugboat also lies in its rarity. Between 1920 and 1970, forest companies such as CIP used many tugboats on Québec’s inland lakes to facilitate the floating of timber to pulp and paper mills. Among those in service in Témiscamingue, this tugboat had the most powerful gasoline engine. Unlike older tugboats, which were equipped with a winch and a towing anchor to pull the enormous booms, the T.-E.-Draper used only the propulsion of its propeller and a steel cable. It is reportedly one of the last surviving tugboats in Québec used for transporting timber by floating.

Remorqueur T.-E.-Draper
