Stoneycroft

Stoneycroft is an early Loyalist building prominently located on a hill along Hampton Road in Quispamsis,. Now a private residence, the exterior of the home appears very much as it would have when first constructed near the end of the 18th century.

Stoneycroft is designated a Protected Provincial Historic Site for being an outstanding example of early Loyalist architecture. Built circa 1800 in the Georgian tradition, the residence has retained integrity in its layout and finishes, reflecting to this day the lives of New Brunswick’s early settlers. It is likely that the house was first constructed as a three bay structure, and later expanded to its present six bays in the early part of the 19th century. It has been largely unchanged since that time. Its location near the major roadway recalls its former use as a public house and inn.

Stoneycroft est une maison construite à l’arrivée des premiers Loyalistes, sise bien en vue sur une colline le long du chemin Hampton à Quispamsis. Aujourd’hui résidence privée, la maison a conservé l’apparence extérieure qu’elle avait dès sa construction vers la fin du XVIIIe siècle.

La maison Stoneycroft a été désignée site historique provincial protégé parce qu’elle constitue un parfait exemple de l’architecture caractéristique de l’époque des premiers colons loyalistes. Construite vers 1800 dans la tradition géorgienne, la résidence a conservé l’intégrité de sa disposition et de ses finitions, reflétant à ce jour la vie des premiers colons du Nouveau-Brunswick. Il est probable que la maison a d’abord été construite comme une structure à trois travées pour être plus tard élargie à sa structure actuelle à six travées à l’aube du XIXe siècle. Elle est restée pratiquement inchangée depuis lors. Son emplacement à proximité de la voie principale rappelle qu’elle servait autrefois de taverne et d’auberge.
