Steamshipping on the South Saskatchewan River

The Northcote, a steamer operated by the Hudson’s Bay Company, was the first to navigate the South Saskatchewan when it passed up as far as the Hague Ferry in the fall of 1879. However, the veteran steamer proved too large to navigate regularly the shallow waters and shifting sands of the river. The dangers to be faced are illustrated by the foundering of the Lily on rocks near Medicine Hat in 1883. The Northwest Coal and Navigation Company dared the hazards of the river with three steamers constructed in 1884, the Albert, the Baroness, and the Minnow. The first two were too large for regular service and were dismantled the following year, but the smaller Minnow saw occasional service until 1887. The last attempt at steam navigation was made by Capt. R. H. Ross of Medicine Hat who operated a steamer on pleasure trips until his City of Medicine Hat collided with the traffic bridge in Saskatoon in 1908.
