Steamboats on the North Saskatchewan

The H.B.C. sternwheeler Northcote navigated this river from Grand Rapids to Fort Carlton, in 1874, and to Edmonton in 1875. Until after 1900, despite fluctuating water levels and sand bars, additional vessels transported freight and passengers, including the ‘Lily’, ‘North West’, ‘Manitoba’, ‘Saskatchewan’ and ‘Marquis’, the latter, of 754 gross tons, 201 feet long, 33.5 feet wide, 5.3 feet deep, being the largest. At this elbow of the river steamboats frequently stopped to take on wood.
