St. Andrew’s Church

St. Andrew’s Church (église Saint-Andrew), a cited historic monument, is a Presbyterian place of worship built around 1923. It is a brick building of vernacular modern architecture with certain elements of Neoclassical influence. It consists of a rectangular plan ending in a projecting choir with a flat chevet, a concrete foundation raised above the ground, and a gable roof. St. Andrew’s Church is located on a small triangular lot in the Aylmer sector of the city of Gatineau.

The heritage value of St. Andrew’s Church lies in its architectural interest. Built around 1923, this vernacular modern church stands out for its architecture, which was avant-garde at the time of its construction. It was part of a new trend in the construction of religious and institutional buildings. This church stands out notably for its form and materials. Among other features, it has a medium-pitched gable roof, brick walls, a concrete foundation raised above the ground, and gable walls partly clad in wooden clapboard. A few architectural elements nevertheless recall the Neoclassical style, such as the cornice returns of the eaves, the windows with transoms and the entrance porch, which includes a classical pediment. St. Andrew’s Church is thus a modern building to which historical references have been added.
