Sitting Bull
Born about 1834 in South Dakota, Sitting Bull, with other noted Sioux Indian chiefs and several thousand followers fled into Canada after the Custer Massacre in 1877. For four years he camped in the Wood Mountain district, firmly but fairly treated by the N.W.M.P. and sustained by provisions from the trader, Jean Louis Legare. In July, 1881 the latter escorted Sitting Bull and the remnants of his band back to the United States, where the famous chief was killed in December 1890.
Sitting Bull
