Sir Samuel Benfield Steele

Born near Orillia, in 1851, an original member of the N.W.M.P., 1873. Superintendant, 1885-1903, Steele played an important role in establishing order in Western Canada, holding commands throughout the Territories. He led the Cavalry, Alberta Field Force, in the North West Rebellion, 1885 and, as commander of N.W.M.P. in Yukon and B.C., 1898-99, preserved order at the height of the Yukon gold rush. He raised and commanded Strathcona’s Horse in the South African War, trained and commanded 2nd Division, World War I, Major-General Steele, K.C.M.G., C.B., died in London, England in 1919.

Sir Samuel Benfield Steele

Né pres d’Orillia, en 1851, membre de l’effectif original de la Gendarmerie du Nord-Ouest, en 1873, Surintendant 1885 à 1903, il établit l’ordre dans l’Ouest canadien. Il commanda la cavalerie lors de l’insurrection de 1885. Commandant du Nord-Ouest, au Yukon et en Colombie-Britannique, il maintint l’ordre lors de la ruée sur l’or du Yukon. Il commanda le Strathcona’s Horse à la guerre de l’Afrique du Sud et la deuxième division canadienne à la Première Guerre mondiale. Chevalier de l’ordre de Saint-Michel et de Saint-George et de l’ordre du Bain, il mourut en Angleterre en 1919.
