Simon-Hill House
The Simon-Hill House, a cited historic monument, is a stone residence built in 1832. This rectangular dwelling is topped by a gable roof. It has two and a half storeys and a gallery covered by the extension of the eaves on its front façade. The rear façade has one storey less; a wing set at a right angle was added there in 1952. The Simon-Hill House is located on large landscaped grounds, well back from the public road, on the outskirts of the downtown area of the Aylmer sector of the city of Gatineau.
The heritage value of the Simon-Hill House lies in its architectural interest. The dwelling is representative of the integration of an urban model into a rural setting and of its evolution. The house, built in 1832, follows on from the neoclassical-inspired urban dwelling that appeared in Lower Canada during the 19th century. The urban stone house adopted a different scale from that favoured in the usual manner of building in the countryside. It offered a taller volume of at least two storeys, topped by a medium-pitched gable roof. The Simon-Hill House has sash windows and chimney stacks set in line with the gable walls. To these characteristics are added elevations of different heights, dictated by adaptation to the slope of the site: two and a half storeys at the front and one and a half storeys at the rear. Later, a large gallery was added at the level of the main storey on the main façade, and the eaves were extended to cover it. This kind of addition is often seen in the Québec countryside from the 1830s and 1840s onward. The Simon-Hill House eloquently represents the adaptation of an urban model to a rural setting and its evolution over the course of the 19th century.
The heritage value of the Simon-Hill House further lies in its age. Built in 1832, the dwelling is one of the oldest in the Aylmer sector of the city of Gatineau. Indeed, most of the streets of Aylmer’s former village core were laid out in 1830. In this light, the age of the Simon-Hill House gives the building a character of antiquity on a regional scale.
The heritage value of the Simon-Hill House also lies in the interest of its setting. The residence is located well back from the public road, on a large property on the outskirts of what became the heart of the village of Aylmer in 1847. Nature is very present in this environment. Thus, because of its position away from the artery that borders it and from Aylmer’s former village core, the Simon-Hill House bears witness to rural domestic architecture.
Maison Simon-Hill
