Simard House

Simard House, classified in 1972, is a house of French inspiration probably built in two stages between 1771 and 1820. The designation also includes the lot, with its appurtenances and outbuildings. Rectangular in plan, this one-and-a-half-storey roughcast stone residence is topped by a steep gable roof with straight slopes covered with cedar shingles. A dairy abuts the rear wall. Located on a hillside along chemin Royal, Simard House is in the municipality of Saint-Ferréol-les-Neiges. It benefits from a protection area.

The heritage value of Simard House lies in its architectural interest. This residence was probably built in two stages between 1771 and 1820. A comparison of the two types of roof framing indicates that the eastern part is the older. Simard House is a house of French inspiration, as shown by its low main dwelling, its roughcast stone masonry, the regular yet asymmetrical arrangement of its openings and its steep gable roof with straight slopes and no overhang. Some interior elements are very old, including the floors, ceilings, built-in cupboards and hearth. This house has undergone few alterations. These include the addition of two dormers on each slope of the roof to make the attic habitable. The lean-to dairy attached to the rear (north) wall was built in 1971 using remains that had been found. Simard House, which is in a good state of preservation, is thus a good example of a house of French inspiration built after the Conquest.

Maison Simard
