Sheridan Lawrence

Born at South Stukeley, Quebec, Lawrence came with his father to Fort Vermilion, N.W.T., in 1886. Merchant, freighter and farmer, he took an active role in nearly every aspect of life in the region, gaining a reputation as friend of the Indian, road builder, magistrate, and patron of education. Epitomizing the strength, enterprise, and versatility of the best pioneer tradition, he was known as the “Emperor of the Peace”. Together with his wife and their fifteen children he helped to push the frontier of agriculture and community life hundreds of miles northward. He died at Peace River, Alberta.

Sheridan Lawrence

Né à South Stukeley (Québec), Lawrence accompagna son père jusqu’au Fort Vermilion (T.N.-O.) en 1886. Marchands, affréteur et agriculteur, il participa activement à presque toutes les manifestations de la vie dans la région et se fit une renommée comme ami de l’Indien, constructeur de routes, magistrat et promoteur de l’instruction. Incarnant la force et l’esprit d’entreprise propre aux pionniers, il était connu sous le nom d’ “empereur de la Paix”. Avec sa femme et ses quinze enfants, il activa le défrichement et la vie communautaire de toute cette vaste région. Il mourut à Peace River (Alberta).
