Shawinigan Fire and Police Station No. 2

Shawinigan Fire and Police Station No. 2 (Poste d’incendie et de police Numéro-Deux-de-Shawinigan), a recognized historic monument, is a rectangular brick building flanked by two lower secondary wings and a square tower. It is located in a heterogeneous urban setting, in the heart of the municipality of Shawinigan.

The heritage value of Shawinigan Fire and Police Station No. 2 lies first in the fact that it is one of the last surviving major buildings constructed during Shawinigan’s golden age. At the turn of the 20th century, Shawinigan experienced a period of great prosperity linked to its industrial development. The city then equipped itself with public buildings worthy of its ambitions: a city hall, a public market, and fire and police stations. These buildings were replaced over the years, and Shawinigan Fire and Police Station No. 2 is one of the last witnesses of that era.

The heritage value of Shawinigan Fire and Police Station No. 2 also lies in its representativeness as an example of Beaux-Arts architecture within the formal typology specific to public buildings of the first quarter of the 20th century. This style, inspired by international trends from the United States and Europe, influenced Québec production in the first half of the century. Beaux-Arts architecture marked something of a break with the eclecticism of the preceding period. The Shawinigan station is a good example of it, through its simple massing, the tripartite composition of its elevations and its classical ornamentation.

The heritage value of Shawinigan Fire and Police Station No. 2 lies finally in its representativeness within the functional typology. The expansion of urban areas in the early 20th century required the construction of modern infrastructure such as fire and police stations. At that time, it was customary to bring the two services together in a single building. Through its distinctive architecture, easily recognizable by its large garage doors and its hose-drying tower, the fire and police station is a structuring element of the urban landscape. Owing to its architectural integrity, the Shawinigan building is a good illustration of this type of building specific to the early 20th century.
