Sexton’s House

The sexton’s house, a cited historic monument, is a residence probably built in the early 20th century. The dwelling is rectangular in plan, one and a half storeys high, and covered by a gable roof with straight slopes. It is set back from the main street, near the parish church, in the municipality of Saint-Cyrille-de-Wendover.

The heritage value of the sexton’s house lies in its representativeness of a type of dwelling, namely the sexton’s house. In Québec’s Catholic parishes, a residence intended to house the sexton is often found near the church. The sexton, also called the beadle (bedeau), is usually a respectable parishioner who looks after the church and the sacristy. His duties are many: he tends the lamps that burn before the Blessed Sacrament, rings the bells at the appropriate times, prepares the altar cloths and everything needed for services. He may also handle the cleaning. The dwelling intended for him is generally modest and follows the movements or styles common in domestic architecture. The sexton’s house in Saint-Cyrille-de-Wendover is inspired by the industrial vernacular architecture in vogue in the early 20th century. This type of residence appeared when domestic architecture was becoming industrialized, at the end of the 19th century. The arrival on the market of prefabricated materials and components offered by catalogue made it possible to build houses at lower cost. The sexton’s house belongs to this movement notably through its simple, small rectangular plan, its gable roof with straight slopes and the symmetrical arrangement of the openings on the façade. Through this architecture, which adopts a model widespread at the time of its construction, the sexton’s house is a representative example of residences intended to house this Church employee.

The heritage value of the sexton’s house also lies in the interest of its siting. The building is located in the centre of the village, within a parish complex that also includes Saint-Cyrille Church and presbytery, the barn-stable and the cemetery charnel house, four cited historic monuments. The sexton’s house is thus an important element of this religious core, which forms the heart of the municipality.
