Samuel George William Archibald

Born in Truro, educated in Massachusetts, Archibald studied law in Halifax before entering Nova Scotia politics. He served in the Assembly (1806-41), as its Speaker (1825-40), and as Attorney-General (1831-41). In 1841 he became Judge of the Court of Vice-Admiralty and Master of the Rolls. A moderate in politics, Archibald was the respected Speaker of the Assembly for fifteen year while keeping on good terms with successive Governors and Colonial Secretaries. Always conscious of propriety and of property, he was, by 1840, out of tune with the more vigorous side of the Reform movement.

Samuel George William Archibald
