Sainte-Thérèse-de-Blainville Presbytery
The Sainte-Thérèse-de-Blainville presbytery, a cited historic monument, is a priest’s residence built around 1925. The two-and-a-half-storey rectangular building of dressed and rusticated stone is capped with a truncated hip roof. A gallery runs across the façade and continues along the left side façade. A two-storey flat-roofed annex extends at a right angle behind the main block. The building is linked to the church by a covered passageway. The Sainte-Thérèse-de-Blainville presbytery is part of the Sainte-Thérèse institutional complex, which includes the church (a cited historic monument), the convent, the former seminary (a recognized historic monument), the school and the hospice.
The heritage value of the Sainte-Thérèse-de-Blainville presbytery lies in its architectural interest. The building is a representative example of the bourgeois houses built in the first decades of the 20th century in an eclectic spirit. This architectural trend is characterized, among other things, by the use of diverse stylistic influences, by the interplay of volumes and materials and by abundant ornamentation. It seeks to create a picturesque effect rather than a homogeneous assemblage. At the turn of the 20th century, eclecticism contributed to the renewal of the vocabulary of Québec religious architecture. The Sainte-Thérèse-de-Blainville presbytery is characteristic of this type through its rectangular volume, its two-and-a-half-storey elevation, its truncated hip roof and its refined ornamentation.
The heritage value of the Sainte-Thérèse-de-Blainville presbytery also lies in its historical interest. The presbytery was built when the parish and the Seminary separated. The parish of Sainte-Thérèse-de-Blainville was erected in 1789 and, in the same year, a presbytery-chapel was built. This structure subsequently became the parish’s first presbytery. Around 1821, the parish priest of the day, Charles-Joseph Ducharme, received his first students there. He thereby laid the foundations of the Séminaire de Sainte-Thérèse. The presbytery was enlarged in 1839, then became the petit séminaire in 1842. In 1849, the Séminaire de Sainte-Thérèse building was inaugurated; the parish priest and the students moved into it. The vacant presbytery became the village school and the sexton’s house. This second presbytery was demolished in 1878. Until 1924, the parish remained united with the Seminary, which provided it with preachers and several parish priests. In 1925, at the end of this union, the present presbytery was built beside the church. A covered passageway links the two buildings. The presbytery bears witness to the evolution of the institutional core and to the relationships among the various religious institutions located there.
The heritage value of the Sainte-Thérèse-de-Blainville presbytery further lies in its representativeness of this type of building with a religious function. The presbytery is the residence of the parish priest, an influential and respected figure who represents the Church at the parish level. The priest’s residence therefore had to be spacious, functional and prestigious. The presbytery combines institutional and residential functions. It has public spaces on the ground floor intended to receive parishioners. During their annual visit, members of the episcopate occupied bedrooms on the upper floor. A separate space was sometimes also reserved for servants.
