Sainte-Brigitte-de-Laval Cemetery Calvary

The Sainte-Brigitte-de-Laval cemetery calvary, a cited historic monument, is a religious ensemble of the Catholic tradition. Erected in 1960, it consists of a representation of Christ on the cross accompanied by those of Mary, Mary Magdalene and Saint John the Evangelist. An inscription appears on the upper part of the cross. The ensemble is located on a mound at the end of the central alley of the parish cemetery, in the municipality of Sainte-Brigitte-de-Laval.

The heritage value of the Sainte-Brigitte-de-Laval cemetery calvary lies in its ethnological interest. It bears witness to the current of devotion to images of the suffering or dead Christ. The growing interest of the faithful in dramatic expressions of the Passion, the Crucifixion, the “Ecce homo” and the “Pietà” led to the erection of numerous outdoor calvaries from the end of the French Regime onward. Several Catholic cemeteries, particularly those located near the parish church, were provided with calvaries. These, representing Christ on the cross, are sometimes sheltered under a small structure or accompanied by other figures associated with the Crucifixion. The one in the Sainte-Brigitte-de-Laval cemetery includes representations of Mary, Saint John the Evangelist and Mary Magdalene. The ensemble is located on a mound evoking Golgotha, the hill of the Crucifixion according to the story. The cemetery calvary evokes old devotions. It is therefore a significant element of the religious heritage of Sainte-Brigitte-de-Laval.
