Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines Presbytery

The Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines presbytery, a cited historic monument, is a parish priest’s residence built in 1887. The two-storey stone building with a rectangular plan is capped with a hip roof and includes a rear annex. A gallery sheltered by a canopy surrounds the building. The presbytery is set back from the public road, on open grounds with mature trees. It is part of the institutional core of the municipality of Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines, made up of the church, the cemetery and the former Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines convent, also cited historic monuments.

The heritage value of the Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines presbytery lies in its architectural interest. The building is a representative example of the bourgeois houses built at the end of the 19th century in an eclectic spirit. This architectural trend is characterized, among other things, by the use of diverse stylistic influences, by the interplay of volumes and materials and by an abundance of ornamentation. It seeks to create a picturesque effect rather than a homogeneous assemblage. At the turn of the 20th century, eclecticism contributed to renewing the vocabulary of Québec religious architecture. The Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines presbytery was built in 1887. The plans were by the firm of architects Maurice Perrault (1857-1909) and Albert Mesnard (1847-1909), which designed many eclectic buildings in the Montréal region during this period. They incorporated the previous priest’s residence, which serves as an annex. The residence belongs to the eclectic movement through its two-storey stone volume, its hip roof, its ornate gallery and its elaborate ornamentation. The remarkable architecture of the Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines presbytery clearly conveys the image of prestige sought by the Church of the time.

The heritage value of the Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines presbytery also lies in its representativeness of this type of religious building. The presbytery is the residence of the parish priest, an influential and respected figure who represented the Church at the parish level. The priest’s residence therefore had to be spacious, functional and prestigious. The presbytery, which combines institutional and residential functions, has public spaces on the ground floor for receiving parishioners. The upper floor, which is private, contains bedrooms, including those reserved for members of the episcopate during annual visits. It may sometimes include a separate space reserved for servants. In Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines, it is the rear annex of the presbytery that serves this function.

The heritage value of the Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines presbytery further lies in the interest of its setting. It stands on a small promontory in the heart of the institutional core. Built in 1887 with the same type of rusticated limestone as the church and the convent, it is one of the structuring elements of this ensemble, which also includes a cemetery. The parish priest’s residence has stood on the same spot since 1787. At that time, the first chapel built on this site also served as the priest’s lodging. The Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines presbytery is still used for religious purposes.
