Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré Basilica

The Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré Basilica, a cited historic monument, is a Catholic place of worship built from 1923 onward. The imposing building clad in dressed stone has a Latin-cross plan. This plan consists of a westwork comprising two very tall bell towers, a central vessel flanked by two aisles on each side, a transept also provided with aisles and chapels, and a projecting choir ending in a semicircular apse. An ambulatory runs around the choir, following its shape. It is punctuated by ten radiating apsidal chapels. Numerous Romanesque Revival details as well as several statues and bas-reliefs adorn the building. Dominating a major institutional complex, the basilica is located in the municipality of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré and stands near the St. Lawrence River.

The heritage value of the Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré Basilica lies in its ethnological interest. The basilica bears witness to the practice of pilgrimage in Québec and to the importance of devotion to Saint Anne. It is the largest pilgrimage site in Québec and one of the most frequented in North America. Christian pilgrimage is a phenomenon of popular religion characterized by the individual contact of the faithful with the sacred. Its practice is associated with beliefs and acts such as miraculous healings, devotions, the candlelight procession, etc. A patron saint is associated with the pilgrimage site. In this case, the basilica is dedicated to Saint Anne, patron saint of Québec. Devotion to Saint Anne, brought to New France by French settlers, was very popular in Québec from the 17th century onward. In 1658, the settlers erected a wooden chapel dedicated to Saint Anne not far from the present site of the basilica. The first pilgrimages date from that time, the shrine attracting Amerindians and settlers alike. Since then, the pilgrimage to Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré has continued to grow in popularity, today drawing more than one million pilgrims annually. Saint Anne is venerated in particular for her miraculous healings by the sick and the disabled. The celebration of the feast of Saint Anne (July 26), preceded by the novena, is a key moment for the pilgrims, who flock to the basilica by the thousands. The basilica thus evokes a practice that has endured for more than 350 years and that remains very much alive.

The heritage value of the basilica lies in its architectural interest. Built from 1923 onward, the basilica belongs to the Beaux-Arts architectural movement. This architecture, which originated in the teaching of the École des beaux-arts in Paris, was frequently used for the construction of public buildings in Québec, but also throughout America, during the first quarter of the 20th century. Its method of composition is based on the principles of balanced proportions, clarity of plan and correspondence between the character of the building and its function. Beaux-Arts architecture also integrated the new materials and recent technologies that appeared at the turn of the 20th century. These made possible more monumental buildings with new proportions. The Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré Basilica is the work of the renowned architects Maxime Roisin (1871-1960) of Paris, Joseph-Elgide-Césaire Daoust (1881-1946) of Montréal and Louis-Napoléon Audet (1881-1971) of Sherbrooke. It illustrates this architecture through its monumentality, its symmetry and its elements inspired by 12th-century Romanesque architecture, such as the round arches, the wide embrasures, the carved archivolts, the large rose window adorning the façade and the many buttresses, arcades and paired openings. In addition, the basilica is richly adorned with statues and bas-reliefs. With its two tall towers rising more than 90 metres above the ground, the basilica is one of the most imposing monuments of religious architecture in Québec.

The heritage value of the basilica lies in its importance in the landscape. In Québec, churches form the heart of the village core. The Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré church dominates a vast institutional complex, some elements of which are directly linked to the pilgrimage. As tradition dictates, it is oriented on an east-west axis, with the choir facing the rising sun, symbol of the risen Christ. Erected near the St. Lawrence River, the basilica, with its imposing and majestic silhouette and its silvery colour, is a landmark both from land and from the river.
