Sainte-Agnès Church (Rue du Patrimoine)
Sainte-Agnès Church, classified in 1960, is a place of worship of the Catholic tradition built in 1841 and 1842. The wooden building has a Latin-cross plan composed of a single-vessel nave, a transept and a projecting chancel ending in a flat chevet. The façade has a central portal and two side doors. It is surmounted by a belfry that tops the ridge of the straight-sided gable roof. A one-and-a-half-storey rectangular sacristy is attached to the chevet in line with the chancel. It is connected to the left arm of the transept by a covered passage. The church dominates a religious complex composed of the former presbytery and the cemetery with its charnel house and enclosure. It is located in a mountainous setting, in the heart of the village core of the Sainte-Agnès sector of the town of La Malbaie.
The heritage value of Sainte-Agnès Church lies in its architectural interest. The building, constructed in 1841 and 1842, is representative of the small parish churches erected in rural areas during the first half of the 19th century. Many of these reflect the Neoclassical influence. This style appeared in Europe in the second half of the 18th century and was introduced into Québec at the turn of the following century. The architect Thomas Baillairgé (1791-1859) contributed greatly to spreading this movement in religious architecture. The façade of Sainte-Agnès Church, characterized notably by a symmetrical distribution of openings and a central portal surmounted by a pediment, illustrates a type of façade proposed by Baillairgé. The round-arched openings, the oculi and the Palladian window are also associated with Neoclassicism. This church is moreover one of the rare surviving examples of a place of worship inspired by Baillairgé that is not built of masonry. It thus bears witness to the simplification of fashionable models to adapt them to the limited financial resources of certain parishes.
The heritage value of Sainte-Agnès Church also lies in the interest of its interior. The decor is representative of the phenomenon of imitation that marked religious architecture in the 19th century. It was executed from 1842 to 1844 under the supervision of Antoine Boucher-Belleville, a master joiner and carpenter from La Malbaie, who acted as contractor. It is a free interpretation of the decor of La Malbaie, dating from 1805 and 1806 and now lost; the proportions were modified here. The decor also illustrates the popularity of Neoclassical-inspired church interiors during the first half of the 19th century. The retable, composed of Ionic columns and a segmental pediment, the vault adorned with transverse arches and glories, the fluted pilasters, the trophies set in moulded panels and the entablature of the chancel extending into the transept and part of the nave are characteristic elements of this style. In addition, three paintings by Antoine Plamondon (1804-1895), executed in 1874, are integrated into the ensemble.
The heritage value of Sainte-Agnès Church further lies in its importance in the landscape. In Québec, churches form the heart of the village core. Sainte-Agnès Church is the main element of an ensemble that also includes the former presbytery and the cemetery with its charnel house and enclosure. It dominates the settlement and the surrounding mountainous lands and is a landmark signalling the presence of the parish.
