Saint-Sylvestre Anglican Cemetery
The Saint-Sylvestre Anglican Cemetery, classified in 1962, is a rectangular space containing some fifty modest-looking headstones. Several funerary monuments date from the second half of the 19th century, and some stand out for their size and material. Secluded by vegetation, this plain cemetery is located on a hillside in the municipality of Saint-Sylvestre.
The heritage value of the Saint-Sylvestre Anglican Cemetery lies in its historical importance. Members of the Anglican and Presbyterian communities, originally from the Eastern Townships and from the British army, settled in the Lotbinière region at the beginning of the 19th century. They arrived by the chemin Craig, which had recently been opened. Subsequently, in 1828, Irish Catholics founded the parish of Saint-Sylvestre. Consecrated in 1857, the Saint-Sylvestre Anglican Cemetery is the only remaining witness to the arrival of the Anglican and Presbyterian communities in this region.
The heritage value of the Saint-Sylvestre Anglican Cemetery also lies in its representativeness of this type of religious site. The plainness of its headstones, the absence of ostentation and the discreet integration of the whole into the natural environment are characteristic of the rural cemeteries of English-speaking Protestant communities and thus illustrate the cultural and religious identity of those who rest there.
