Saint-Raphaël-Archange Presbytery
The Saint-Raphaël-Archange presbytery, a cited historic monument, is a Neoclassical-influenced presbytery erected in 1843. The building consists of a large rectangular stone main block topped by a gable roof with extended eaves. This building is located near Saint-Raphaël-Archange Church, also a cited historic monument. The presbytery is set back from the street, on a lot graced with mature trees, in the L’Île-Bizard-Sainte-Geneviève borough of the city of Montréal.
The heritage value of the Saint-Raphaël-Archange presbytery lies in its historical interest. Before the construction of the church and presbytery, the inhabitants of Île Bizard had to brave the waters of the Rivière des Prairies, or cross an ice bridge in winter, to reach the place of worship of the neighbouring parish, Sainte-Geneviève. For the residents of Île Bizard, the building of a church and a presbytery in 1843 was an act of self-affirmation. Since the church burned in 1872, the presbytery is an important witness to the early development of Île Bizard.
The heritage value of the Saint-Raphaël-Archange presbytery also lies in its architectural interest. This large building is a representative example of the Neoclassical-inspired Québec house. The main block raised above the ground, the rigorous composition of the façade, comprising a central door flanked by a pair of windows, the gallery, the balustrade and the extended eaves are characteristics of the Neoclassical-inspired Québec house. Despite some alterations, the Saint-Raphaël presbytery remains a witness to the architecture and construction methods of the first half of the 19th century in the St. Lawrence Valley, particularly in the Montréal region.
The heritage value of the Saint-Raphaël-Archange presbytery further lies in its representativeness of a building type. The presbytery is the residence of the parish priest, an influential and respected figure who represented the Church. At the time, the ecclesiastical authorities required that priests enjoy suitable, spacious and rather prestigious housing. It also had to include rooms for receiving parishioners and be large enough to house the servant, the Sunday curate or curates, and the bishop and his retinue during episcopal visits. With its imposing dimensions, the quality of its materials and its monumentality, the Saint-Raphaël-Archange presbytery fully corresponds to the way presbyteries were built in the 19th century in the St. Lawrence Valley.
