Saint-Raphaël-Archange Church
Saint-Raphaël-Archange Church, a cited historic monument, is a place of worship of the Catholic tradition built in 1873 and 1874. This monumental Romanesque Revival stone building is erected on a Latin-cross plan with a projecting choir ending in a semicircular apse. Its restrained façade has three entrances and two slightly projecting towers topped by tall spires. A sacristy adjoins the rear of the choir. The church is set back from the main street, in the heart of the village core of Île Bizard, near the Saint-Raphaël-Archange presbytery, also a cited historic monument, in the L’Île-Bizard-Sainte-Geneviève borough of the city of Montréal.
The heritage value of Saint-Raphaël-Archange Church lies in its architectural interest. This church was built on a Latin-cross plan with a projecting choir ending in a semicircular apse, probably inspired by the model disseminated in the St. Lawrence Valley by Abbé Pierre Conefroy (1752-1816). Saint-Raphaël-Archange Church was erected in 1873 and 1874 to plans by the architects Victor Bourgeau (1809-1888) and Alcibiade Leprohon (1842-1902). Between 1850 and 1888, Bourgeau almost single-handedly monopolized the construction of religious buildings in the diocese of Montréal. The esteem of Monsignor Ignace Bourget (1799-1885) for the architect Bourgeau contributed greatly to his renown. Saint-Raphaël-Archange Church differs somewhat from Victor Bourgeau’s body of churches, notably in its use of features specific to the Romanesque Revival style. Bourgeau made little use of this architectural vocabulary, preferring Neoclassicism, the Gothic Revival and the Baroque Revival. The Romanesque Revival components of Saint-Raphaël-Archange Church include, in particular, the semicircular shape of the openings, the main door with a multifoil transom and the rose window above the main window of the façade. Saint-Raphaël-Archange Church also has a monumental character owing to its volume and its imposing façade framed by two slightly projecting side towers. Both, perfectly symmetrical, are topped by a belfry and a polygonal spire. Despite its monumental character, this church is restrained in design. Its materials are of high quality. Rusticated stone serves as the main exterior cladding, while a smoother-finished cut stone highlights the internal divisions and sets off the openings. Saint-Raphaël-Archange Church has undergone few exterior modifications and is in a good state of preservation.
The heritage value of Saint-Raphaël-Archange Church also lies in its relationship with its surroundings. The church and its site are a landmark on the south side of Île Bizard. Its location at the intersection of two of the island’s main roads adds to its importance. In addition, an imposing square sets off the church, as does the vast cemetery at the rear, whose outline clearly recalls the original lot pattern. Today, the church is still a landmark in the landscape of Île Bizard.
