Saint-Octave Presbytery

The Saint-Octave Presbytery, a cited historic monument, is a parish priest’s house erected in 1916. The red-brick building consists of a rectangular main block and a second volume set slightly back. The building is capped with a hipped roof. A covered gallery running along three of its sides has a wrought-iron balustrade and worked wooden columns and brackets. The Saint-Octave Presbytery is located on a large landscaped lot set back from the street, near the church, in the centre of the municipality of Dosquet.

The heritage value of the Saint-Octave Presbytery lies in its architectural interest. The building is representative of a type of residential architecture widespread in the first half of the 20th century, the cubic house. This model, commonly called the “Four Square House” in the United States, was developed around 1890. It was then widely disseminated through architectural catalogues and quickly became very popular throughout North America, thanks to its simple, spacious volume. Either restrained or elaborate ornamentation could be applied to it. The cubic house became known at the time when domestic architecture was becoming industrialized. Its appearance coincided with the arrival on the market of prefabricated materials and components available by catalogue. The versatile model was also adopted by some architects. The Saint-Octave Presbytery is a good example of the cubic house, notably through its two-storey elevation, its hipped roof and the gallery along three sides topped by a balcony on the façade. A roof deck and a secondary block were added to the basic model. The monumentality of its architecture demonstrates the social importance of this building. The Saint-Octave Presbytery bears witness to the popularity of this architectural type for the construction of parish priests’ houses in Québec in the early 20th century.

The heritage value of the Saint-Octave Presbytery also lies in its historical interest. The building recalls the period when the parish was established. From the turn of the 1830s, people settled on the territory of Dosquet. Over the years, a wood mill, a sawmill and businesses were established in the settlement, which was also served by the railway. The parish of Saint-Octave was established in 1912 to provide religious services close at hand. Three years later, construction of the presbytery began in the heart of the parish. It preceded the erection of the church, which took place in 1922. The Saint-Octave Presbytery is one of the oldest buildings in Dosquet.
