Saint-Martin Presbytery

The Saint-Martin presbytery, a cited historic monument, is a parish residence built in 1890 and altered in 1922. The wooden building is composed of a main volume and a set-back side volume. Both sections are rectangular in plan, two storeys high and topped by a low-pitched hip roof. Facing the rivière Chaudière, the presbytery is set back from the public road, in the heart of the village core of the municipality of Saint-Martin. Together with the cemetery and the Saint-Martin church, also cited, it forms the parish complex.

The heritage value of the Saint-Martin presbytery lies first in its architectural interest. It was built in 1890 by joiners Évangéliste and Olivier Rodrigue. It is an imposing bourgeois residence characterized by a rectangular, two-storey main body with a set-back side annex. The building was altered in 1922 to bring its architecture up to date and harmonize it with the other buildings of the institutional core, including the church and the convent. It was then given a hip roof and neoclassical-influenced ornamentation. Through its imposing architecture and rich ornamentation, the Saint-Martin presbytery bears witness to its importance and to the prestige sought by the Church at that time.

The heritage value of the Saint-Martin presbytery also lies in its historical interest. In 1878, only about ten years after settlement of the township of Jersey began, a lot facing the rivière Chaudière was purchased by the parish in order to establish the future institutional core of Saint-Martin. In 1901, the first wooden bridge linking the two banks was built near the church and the presbytery. The municipality of Saint-Martin subsequently developed around the institutional core, whose siting in the valley of the rivière Chaudière is representative of Beauce landscapes. Occupying an open space near the church and the cemetery, the presbytery is an essential component of the heart of the municipality of Saint-Martin.
