Saint-Martin Church

The Saint-Martin church, a cited historic monument, is a Catholic place of worship built in 1902 and 1903. The eclectic-influenced building has a plan composed of a rectangular nave and a narrower choir ending in a canted apse. Its façade features a central, partly projecting bell tower and is flanked by corner towers adorned with pedimented portals. A campanile surmounts the rear ridge of the choir. A rectangular, one-storey sacristy on a raised basement is attached to the apse in line with the choir and connected to it by a covered passage. The Saint-Martin church stands on open ground slightly raised above the public road. It is located near the presbytery, also a cited historic monument, in the village core of the municipality of Saint-Martin.

The heritage value of the Saint-Martin church lies in its architectural interest. It bears witness to the influence of the eclectic movement at the turn of the 20th century. Eclecticism is an assemblage of architectural and ornamental elements drawn from various historical styles and combined more freely, in a quest for monumentality and new visual effects. The Québec Catholic Church often resorted to it for the construction of its places of worship from the late 19th century onward. The Saint-Martin church was built in 1902 and 1903 by contractor Elzéar Métivier of Saint-Damien-de-Buckland. Many elements, including the round-arched windows, the circular and oval openings on the façade, the pilasters and pediments adorning the bell tower and portals, and the decorative keystones of the casings, recall classical forms. However, the ornamentation concentrated on the façade and the angled placement of the side towers rather reflect the quest for monumentality characteristic of eclectic architecture. In addition, the place of worship is distinguished by its pressed-metal cladding, a material more often used for domestic or commercial buildings.

The heritage value of the Saint-Martin church also lies in its importance in the landscape. In rural areas, in regions populated mainly by French-speaking Catholics, villages were often organized around the parish buildings. The church steeple dominates the surrounding buildings, becomes a landmark in the landscape and signals the presence of the parish. The Saint-Martin church is built on open ground slightly raised above the public road. It is part of a religious complex that also includes a presbytery and a Sacré-Coeur monument. The place of worship is thus an essential element of this parish core, which forms the heart of the municipality of Saint-Martin.
