Saint-Laurent Forge
The Saint-Laurent forge, a cited historic monument, is a craftsman’s workshop built in 1885. The one-and-a-half-storey rectangular wooden building is topped by a roof that is gambrel at the front and straight-pitched at the rear. The façade is pierced by a wide double door and a window. The Saint-Laurent forge stands along the route principale in the village core of the municipality of Saint-Anaclet-de-Lessard.
The heritage value of the Saint-Laurent forge lies in its historical and ethnological interest. It illustrates the persistence of traditional crafts in certain rural communities. A residence and a blacksmith’s shop were built in 1885 by Zéphérin Lavoie (1836-1907). The blacksmith Léonidas Saint-Laurent (1908-1985) acquired the buildings in 1939. There he practised the trades of blacksmith and farrier using traditional methods until 1973. He tended animals on farms, shod horses, repaired vehicles and farm implements and made small tools. In 1950, he installed a “travail”, a traditional blacksmith’s device used to immobilize unruly horses. Blacksmith shops, like general stores, were busy meeting places for local residents and formed the hub of a whole network of social relations. They were generally located in the very heart of villages. The Saint-Laurent forge therefore bears witness to the persistence of certain crafts into the second half of the 20th century. It also recalls the importance of certain businesses in the social life of small rural communities.
The heritage value of the Saint-Laurent forge also lies in its architectural interest. The workshop is representative of the outbuildings that characterized the agricultural landscape of the Québec countryside in the 19th century. Its modest rectangular plan one and a half storeys high, its vertical board siding, its cedar shingle and sheet-metal roofing and its large double door are characteristic of rural forges. The Saint-Laurent forge is distinguished by its roof, gambrel at the front and straight-pitched at the rear. The gambrel roof form was, moreover, frequently used in local architecture in the late 19th century. The Saint-Laurent forge is thus a well-preserved example of a former blacksmith’s shop within a village core.
Forge Saint-Laurent
