Saint-Jacques Presbytery
The Saint-Jacques presbytery, a cited historic monument, is a rectory built in 1897. This two-storey stone building has a rectangular plan. It is topped by a truncated hipped roof. A covered balcony is set on the façade and a gallery wraps around two sides of the building. A square annex is built at the rear right of the main body. The presbytery is set back from the street, on landscaped grounds that it shares with the Saint-Jacques church. It is also near the convent of the Sisters of Saint Anne and the Vieux Collège, in the institutional core of the municipality of Saint-Jacques.
The heritage value of the Saint-Jacques presbytery lies in its architectural interest. The building bears witness to the persistent use of classical forms for institutional buildings at the turn of the 20th century. These forms, associated with ideas of order, power and stability, were highly prized by the Catholic Church. Stone cladding, a regular and symmetrical arrangement of openings and their ornamentation generally distinguish these buildings. The Saint-Jacques presbytery was built in 1897 to the plans of Nazaire Dugas (1864-1942), an architect, contractor and joiner from Caraquet, New Brunswick. This building, characteristic of the institutional buildings constructed at that time, has a rectangular plan, a two-storey elevation and a wide gallery running along two sides of the rectory. A rougher stone is used for the base. The influence of the classical vocabulary is also perceptible in the ornamentation, characterized notably by the dentilled cornice, the pediment above the balcony and the cut-stone surrounds and quoins. The Saint-Jacques presbytery is a fine example of rural Catholic institutional buildings at the turn of the 20th century.
The heritage value of the Saint-Jacques presbytery further lies in its landscape interest. Together with the Saint-Jacques church, the convent of the Sisters of Saint Anne and the Vieux Collège, three cited historic monuments located nearby, it forms the village’s Catholic institutional ensemble. The former sexton’s house, the parish cemetery, its enclosure and its calvary complete this site, which dominates the heart of the municipality. The presbytery is enhanced by its location slightly set back from the street, on landscaped grounds that it shares with the church.
