Saint-Hubert Presbytery
The Saint-Hubert presbytery, a recognized historic monument, is a one-and-a-half-storey rectangular wooden priest’s residence with a gable roof. A covered gallery runs along two façades and incorporates a hexagonal pavilion. This presbytery, built in 1878, is located in the heart of the municipality of Saint-Hubert-de-Rivière-du-Loup, on the same lot as the Saint-Hubert church and parallel to it.
The heritage value of the Saint-Hubert presbytery lies in its historical interest. It was the parish’s first chapel, which also housed the parish priest. It was converted into a presbytery in 1900, when the church was built.
The heritage value of the Saint-Hubert presbytery also lies in its architectural interest. A presbytery usually stands out from the other residences of a parish through its more elaborate architecture. The Saint-Hubert presbytery, built of squared logs (pièce sur pièce) and clad in wooden clapboard, is particularly distinguished by the elegance conferred on it by ornamental elements borrowed from Neoclassicism, notably the symmetrical arrangement of the openings on the façade and gable walls; the straight-pitched roof with shallow eaves, covered in Canadian-style (tôle à la canadienne) sheet metal, which forms a cornice and suggests a pediment on the gable walls; the pilaster-shaped corner boards; the main entrance consisting of a glazed door with a transom flanked by sidelights and a surround with pilasters and cornice; the moulded surrounds of the openings with hooded (capucine) heads; and the triangular pediment above the dormers.
