Saint-Henri Presbytery

The Saint-Henri presbytery, a cited historic monument, is a parish house built in 1906. The two-storey brick building is composed of simple volumes. It is topped by hip roofs pierced by dormers. The façade is adorned with a large dormer surmounted by a pyramidal roof, a balcony and a gallery that continues along one side. The presbytery is set slightly back from the public road on a large lot facing the rivière Etchemin. It is located near the church and the cemetery in the heart of the municipality of Saint-Henri.

The heritage value of the Saint-Henri presbytery lies in its architectural interest. It is representative of parish houses built in the early 20th century. The two-storey beige brick building dates from 1906. The simple volumes, hip roofs, dormers and long gallery recall the influence of the cubic house, a popular model at the time, particularly for the construction of presbyteries. Ornamental elements drawn from various movements are added to this structure, including the pyramidal roof of the large dormer and the brackets. Together with the balcony, these elements emphasize the main entrance, thus contributing to its imposing character. The monumentality of the building symbolizes the importance of the Church and the parish priest within the social organization. The Saint-Henri presbytery bears witness to this predominance in Québec in the early 20th century.

The heritage value of the Saint-Henri presbytery also lies in its historical interest. Between 1750 and 1782, a presbytery was fitted out on the upper floor of the first chapel, located in another part of the village. In 1781, when the second place of worship was built, the village centre moved to its current site. A parish house was established in 1784 within this new complex. The present building was constructed in 1906. The Saint-Henri presbytery marks the continuity of the religious core in the heart of the municipality of Saint-Henri since the end of the 18th century.
