Saint-François-Xavier School
The Saint-François-Xavier School, a cited historic monument, is a Beaux-Arts-influenced institutional building erected in 1924. This rectangular-plan, three-storey brick and stone building is topped by a hip roof and adorned with a stepped pediment. The slope of the land exposes an additional storey at the rear of the building. The Saint-François-Xavier School is located in the Chicoutimi borough of the city of Saguenay.
The Saint-François-Xavier School is part of the rue du Séminaire heritage site.
The heritage value of the Saint-François-Xavier School lies in its representativeness of the Beaux-Arts style. This style appeared at the end of the 19th century and was used until around 1930, mainly in the construction of public and institutional buildings. It draws extensively on the classical vocabulary while asserting a particular interest in modernity, expressed notably in the materials used and the method of construction. Clarity of plan, symmetry and balanced proportions are the basic principles of this architecture, as are the expression of the building’s function and of its importance in its surroundings. The Saint-François-Xavier School is characteristic of this architecture notably through its imposing rectangular volume topped by a hip roof and resting on a stone foundation, its frontispiece topped by a triangular gable pierced with a Palladian window, and the regular and symmetrical distribution of the openings on the facade. The building’s ornamentation, for its part, shows the influence of Victorian eclecticism, still in vogue at the turn of the 20th century. This current is marked by the use of decorative elements borrowed from various stylistic repertoires. On the former school, this influence is represented by the bracketed cornice that encircles the roof and by the stepped indentations at the base of the pediment. The architecture of the Saint-François-Xavier School is thus characterized by the presence of two stylistic currents, namely the Beaux-Arts style and Victorian eclecticism. In addition, the elements and materials that contribute to the building’s ornamentation and that evoke the institutional function of the place have been preserved. This integrity reinforces the architectural interest of the building.
The heritage value of the school also lies in the renown of its architect, Alfred Lamontagne (1883-1967). A native of Lévis, he was trained by the architect Lorenzo Auger (1879-1942). He settled in Chicoutimi in 1912, thus becoming the first resident architect of the region. During his career, he designed more than 200 buildings in Chicoutimi, including a large number of institutional buildings such as the former seminary (1927), the Saint-François-Xavier cathedral (1919-1922) and the Sacré-Coeur presbytery (1919). He also designed several residential projects. Through his architectural achievements, Alfred Lamontagne inscribed the legacy of the classical tradition in the built landscape of 20th-century Chicoutimi.
The heritage value of the school also lies in its association with the religious community of the Soeurs du Bon-Pasteur. Having settled in the Saguenay in 1864 essentially to undertake teaching work, the sisters founded the Chicoutimi boarding school upon their arrival. It became the Collège classique in 1947, the first college for girls in the region. The École Normale des Soeurs du Bon-Pasteur, for its part, was established in 1907, and the sisters taught there until 1968. In 1924, the Saint-François-Xavier School was added to the educational institutions run by the Soeurs du Bon-Pasteur in Chicoutimi; they taught there until 1974.
The heritage value of the school further lies in its integration into the built environment. The building fits into a street lined on both sides with bourgeois houses that form a homogeneous ensemble. In addition, the former school is located near an institutional complex formed by the Saint-François-Xavier cathedral and its presbytery, the former boarding school of the Soeurs du Bon-Pasteur, the bishop’s palace of Chicoutimi, the former Séminaire de Chicoutimi and the former École d’agriculture. This exceptional environment forms the rue du Séminaire heritage site. The Saint-François-Xavier School thus fits perfectly into this built environment.
