Saint-François-du-Lac Presbytery
The Saint-François-du-Lac presbytery, a cited historic monument, is a priest’s residence built in 1899. Belonging to the Victorian architectural movement, the two-storey building is of red brick. It consists of two main rectangular volumes, one behind the other, topped by a flat roof. The façade features a full-width covered gallery. A garage, a vestibule and a small veranda stand against the rear volume. The Saint-François-du-Lac presbytery is set slightly back from rue Notre-Dame, on a wooded lot beside the church, in the municipality of Saint-François-du-Lac.
The heritage value of the Saint-François-du-Lac presbytery lies in its architectural interest. The building belongs to the Victorian architectural movement. More specifically, it illustrates a trend of that era, the Italianate villa. This type is usually found in the countryside and harmonizes with the landscape. It is an interpretation of Italian architecture by English and later North American architects. This model of luxurious residence appeared in Québec in the second half of the 19th century. It was used notably in the Bois-Francs region by architects Louis Caron Sr. (1848-1917) and Louis Caron Jr. (1871-1926), who designed and built the Saint-François-du-Lac presbytery. This priest’s residence is characteristic of Italianate villas, notably through its tall paired windows with stone lintels surmounted by round arches, its red brick cladding, its stone quoins, its wide bracketed cornice pierced by a semicircular window on each façade, and its elaborate ornamentation. The building, surrounded by massive trees and set slightly back from the road, blends into the surrounding landscape.
The heritage value of the Saint-François-du-Lac presbytery also lies in its association with Louis Caron Sr. and Louis Caron Jr. Very prolific, these two architects are known for having designed more than twenty churches in the diocese of Nicolet between 1890 and 1910. They also designed a good number of Italianate middle-class residences in the region, the best known being the Wilfrid-Laurier house (1876) in Arthabaska, now a classified historic monument. The architects owned a factory in Nicolet comprising a sawmill, a forge and sculpture, painting and joinery workshops. Louis Caron Jr. also served as mayor of Nicolet from 1909. The construction of the Saint-François-du-Lac presbytery came at the height of the architects’ career. The building has elements linking it to other presbyteries and residences designed by the Carons, including the brick cladding, the stone and wood ornaments, the tall paired windows and the covered gallery.
The heritage value of the Saint-François-du-Lac presbytery also lies in its representativeness of a building type, the presbytery. In Québec parishes, the presbytery is the residence of the curé, an influential figure who represents the bishop and the Church. The building therefore had to be large and prestigious. The presbytery traditionally includes an office on the ground floor as well as rooms where the curé receives parishioners. Upstairs, several bedrooms are intended to accommodate the bishop and his retinue during episcopal visits; others house the domestic servant and the curates. The Saint-François-du-Lac presbytery has 25 rooms, interior woodwork and elaborate exterior ornamentation. It is a building that meets the standards of prestige of this type of religious residence.
The heritage value of the Saint-François-du-Lac presbytery also lies in its setting within an institutional and religious complex. The building stands on a wooded lot adjacent to the cemetery and to the Saint-François-Xavier church, a classified historic monument. This grouping of religious buildings is typical of Québec’s village institutional complexes at the turn of the 20th century.
