Saint-François-du-Lac Church

The Saint-François-du-Lac church, classified in 1957, is a Catholic place of worship built from 1845 to 1849. The plan of this stone building consists of a rectangular nave with a central aisle and two side aisles and a narrower chancel ending in a semicircular apse. Neoclassical in inspiration, its monumental façade has a central section crowned by a finial and flanked by two slightly projecting towers, each surmounted by a belfry. A one-storey rectangular stone sacristy, topped by a gable roof with slightly flared eaves, is attached to the apse in line with the chancel. Set back from the street, the church stands in the heart of the village core of the municipality of Saint-François-du-Lac. It is surrounded by the church square, the cemetery and the presbytery.

The heritage value of the Saint-François-du-Lac church lies in its architectural interest. Neoclassical in inspiration, the building recalls the popularity of this movement, which in the 19th century significantly influenced the work of architects such as Thomas Baillairgé (1791-1859). Baillairgé devised a façade model that he applied to several places of worship. That of the Saint-François-du-Lac church, flanked by two towers each surmounted by a belfry, is typical of 19th-century monumental façades. The tripartite horizontal and vertical composition reflects the interior divisions and allows elements to be arranged according to a strict geometry. The dressed-stone portals, round-arched windows, finial, belfry bases, stringcourse and quoins are among the elements borrowed from the Neoclassical vocabulary. In addition, the church has a rectangular nave with three aisles and a narrower chancel. This plan, widespread in the 19th century, offered more interior space and was less costly to build than the Latin-cross plan, while still allowing side altars to be installed. The wooden finial covered with sheet metal imitating dressed stone, lighter and more economical, also reflects the techniques used during that century to adapt religious buildings to site conditions, population growth and parish resources.

The heritage value of the Saint-François-du-Lac church also lies in the interest of its interior décor. The architectural décor reflects the influence of Neoclassicism and illustrates the imitation common in the 19th century. It is inspired by that of the Sainte-Geneviève church in Montréal, from which it mainly borrows the colonnade and the false vault. The choice of this décor, executed to plans by Thomas Baillairgé, recalls this architect’s popularity with the clergy. Neoclassicism is illustrated here by the Ionic colonnade separating the central aisle from the side aisles, the engaged Ionic pilasters, the chancel entablature that partly continues along the colonnade, the barrel-vaulted false vault punctuated by transverse arches, the round-arched openings and the pulpit decorated with classical motifs. The Saint-François-du-Lac church is thus representative of both the architectural movements and the practices that marked 19th-century religious architecture.
