Saint-François-de-la-Rivière-du-Sud Historic Site

The Saint-François-de-la-Rivière-du-Sud historic site, classified in 1988, is an institutional complex associated with Catholic worship. It comprises the former presbytery (built around 1763 and enlarged in 1811), the calvary (Christ from 1798, aedicule from 1881), the église de Saint-François-de-Sales (1865), the former convent (1883) and the presbytery (1887). It also includes other elements, among them a bandstand, a cross, a fountain, a garage and a charnel house. This historic site is located on a rocky ridge at the heart of the village core of the municipality of Saint-François-de-la-Rivière-du-Sud.

The former presbytère de Saint-François-de-Sales is, in addition, classified as a historic monument.

The heritage value of the Saint-François-de-la-Rivière-du-Sud historic site lies in the interest and diversity of the architecture of its buildings. The former presbytery is representative of the French-inspired rural house, while the church is rather characteristic of Neoclassicism, which influenced religious architecture until the turn of the 20th century. The aedicule of the calvary is inspired by the Gothic Revival style. Somewhat more recent, the former convent and the presbytery belong to the Second Empire influence. The historic site thus illustrates most of the major stylistic trends present in Québec in the 19th century.

The heritage value of the Saint-François-de-la-Rivière-du-Sud historic site also lies in its representativeness as an institutional complex associated with Catholic worship. Such complexes form the centre of villages and the heart of the community, which is reflected, among other things, in prestigious architecture. The typical complex brings together the church, the presbytery and the cemetery, educational buildings such as the convent and the school, and sometimes community buildings such as the parish hall. The Saint-François-de-la-Rivière-du-Sud historic site is a particularly representative example (church, presbytery, former presbytery, former convent, calvary, bandstand, cross, statue of the Virgin in a grotto, fountain, garage, charnel house) and is in an excellent state of preservation.

The heritage value of the Saint-François-de-la-Rivière-du-Sud historic site also lies in the particular features of its siting. The complex lies along a rocky ridge overlooking the surrounding plain and takes advantage of the natural components of the place. The buildings are concentrated along a narrow, tree-lined road.

The heritage value of the Saint-François-de-la-Rivière-du-Sud historic site further lies in its association with certain renowned Québec architects of the second half of the 19th century, including François-Xavier Berlinguet (1830-1916), David Ouellet (1844-1915) and Herménégilde Morin. Berlinguet, who drew up the plans for the church, was an important architect, sculptor and civil engineer from Québec. After apprenticing with Berlinguet, David Ouellet, the author of the plans for the presbytery, became one of the most illustrious representatives of Québec religious architecture at the turn of the 20th century. Over his career, he built or refitted more than one hundred churches, presbyteries and convents in eastern Québec. As for Herménégilde Morin, who drew up the plans for the calvary aedicule, he was a native of Saint-François-de-la-Rivière-du-Sud. Less well known than the other two, this architect produced several works in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region, including churches and the village of Val-Jalbert in the early 20th century. Also noteworthy is the presence in the calvary aedicule of a Christ on the cross by François Baillairgé (1759-1830), a highly renowned artist and architect who worked in the first half of the 19th century.
